Camera Bags

So I’m looking for a new camera bag. I’ve got a trip to Central Asia (more information on that later) coming up and I’ve decided it’s time to invest in a more versatile camera bag.

Right now I use my Kelly Moore bag for almost everything (toting my laptop to work, shooting weddings and portraits). I love it! But sadly it’s not going to really cut it when I’m out in the middle of no where trucking along through airports.

I also use my slingshot Lowepro. I usually store my camera in this bag and so far it has been the most convient thing for me to travel overseas with, but I either have to carry it by itself through airports or find a way to stuff it in another bag. No bueno :(

So here are my choices so far for my new and improved bag of travel:

1. Lowepro Pro Roller x100 – I mean this little baby does it all. It holds all your gear firmly in place with a designated spot. I can also store my iPad, and 15″ MacBook Pro. However, there isn’t much room for a whole lot else. However, it does detach and come out of the case so you can use it like a backpack. This can be handy so once I have all my stuff at the hotel (or tent) I can just use the backpack for going out on the field.

2. Osprey Pack – Meridian Series Deluxe Convertible - Now I really love this one, especially for a carry on. It has a detachable backpack, small pocket for your liquids, can also be used as a large backpack, a business card holder, and pretty large compartment…the downside? It’s not made with all those nifty little compartments and padding for your gear. So I’d probably still have to carry my slingshot Lowepro or invest in some cases for each individual lens and camera body.

ThinkTank also has some good options, but again not a whole lot of room for extra stuff.

So tell me, what’s your favorite camera bag?

Why an iPad is useful for Photographers

July 18th, 2012

So today I’m getting an iPad. Let me clarify, a cheap, used one. (yes, there is such thing) I’ve been hoping to run into a deal like this for awhile: a 16gb, first gen, 3G and wifi for only $150! You see, I was one of those apple fanatics who believe an iPad couldn’t really [...]

So today I’m getting an iPad. Let me clarify, a cheap, used one. (yes, there is such thing) I’ve been hoping to run into a deal like this for awhile: a 16gb, first gen, 3G and wifi for only $150!

You see, I was one of those apple fanatics who believe an iPad couldn’t really help me. I mean, I have my computer and my iPhone, as well as a Kindle, so what would I possibly do with an iPad…

Oh how I was wrong. But the main reason the iPad is going to come in handy is for photography. You see, when I’m traveling either to a local shoot or across the world I no longer have to worry about lugging my computer with me. I can simply get this nifty little adapter (or this one if you shoot with Compact Flash) that lets me download my images straight from my camera (in RAW format too) to the iPad. I can then transfer them to a USB drive. So now I have files stored on the iPad and USB. (I always try to make sure I have my images at least two different places)

This way I have more space on my cards and if something gets stolen I have a back up. :)

So for all you photographers out there who use the iPad for your industry, I’d love to hear any tricks you’ve found.
